History and culture

The St. Triphon hill has been continuously occupied since the bronze age. Beautiful objects found at this site attest to a Roman occupation.

The first texts mentioning the tower of St. Triphon date back to the 13th century. In 1232, Thomas of Savoy granted the castle as a fief to Guy de Saillon who, in exchange, ceded to the count his rights to Saillon.

Subsequently, the lords of Saillon, then those of Pontverre, who were related to them, resided at St. Triphon as Savoy vassals. In the 14th century, the fief changed hands several times, until in 1341, it came back to the Thomme family, a Lombard family of bankers who served the House of Savoy. Subsequently, it passed to the Rovéréaz family who succeeded in grouping its principal properties and rights around 1530.

Although they retained their land ownership rights until 1798, their sovereignty rights were taken over, after the Burgundy wars, by the Bernese. They were attributed to the "mandement" of Ollon.

As for the Castle of St. Triphon, it was, like so many others, a victim of the Burgundy wars.

Archive documents were made available by the Fondation des Archives historiques de l'Abbaye de St-Maurice (Historical Archive Foundation of the Abbey of Saint-Maurice).
